Here's the method I use every time I want to capture an idea. Idraw out -bars or measures first. Why bars? Because it isan ideal framework to work in. Eight bars of music are enough togenerate a complete musical sentence and can usually be repeatedonce or twice. Next, I improvise and see what comes up. THEN Iwill write down the chords I am playing and the first -bars ofmelody.Writing down the first -bars of melody helps me remember theentire theme for the -bar phrase. I usually stay within one keyto make it easy. This means I'll have chords to work with. InC Major, the chords would be, C Maj. - D min. - E min. - F Maj.- G Maj. and A min.
